Three hours going up from Santiago de Chile by the Route 5 you can find the iconic Huentelauquen empanadas. Many Chileans agree that this are the best empanadas in the north. We may say for sure that this place is a must stop when you are by La Serena or Coquimbo region, or if you are going to start the pan american route.
During a weekend getaway on a Masai Camper we confirmed that this empanadas are really delicious. Empanadas are a typical snack made of fine and crispy wheat dough stuffed with multiple fillings. The Huentelauquen empanadas are very traditional, stuffed with cheese and fried. The artisanal cheese filling is very abundant which makes them so good. You can expect a plentiful bite and a divine sample of the chilean gastronomy.
This are the most stuffed empanadas with cheese.
This restaurant started as a cheese farm, later on the owners used the cheese for empanadas. On this road stop they also sell artisanal cheese for take out. You´ll see cows running around.
The place has picnic space and its very open and peaceful. Yo can also taste the traditional papaya juice from they harvest. Moreover there you can find something that travelers really appreciate, clean sanitaries.
